CHAPTER TEN

IT RAINED, MAKING IT a bad day for cab drivers. The day’s take was good because everyone who usually walked small distances to the grocery store or the post office called a cab instead. But then no one on the road seemed to remember how to drive in the rain since they hadn’t seen it since spring.

And Paris had the old station wagon back, the LeBaron safely parked at home until she could return it to Randy that evening. She was sure she’d put an end to their running “dates,” so she’d have to drive it to his apartment.

She had no idea what was wrong with her. She’d loved everything about last night. She’d loved his touch, his kisses, the tender way his body invaded hers with the utmost tenderness and complete possession. And she’d loved waking up in his arms, turning over to find him smiling at her, bumping into him in the bedroom as they got dressed, planning to breakfast together.

It had something to do with her mother and sister showing up. Something to do with their easy acceptance of him and his camaraderie with them—his ability to be honest with her mother and still charm her.

How could he get along with them so easily when it was a constant tactical effort for her? And what did he mean by telling her mother he used to agree that a casual relationship was a good way to go?

How could he have changed his mind? Knowing she could leave Maple Hill whenever she chose to continue this journey of self-discovery, or to go to law school, or to simply just go, was the only reason she’d agreed to let him into her life. It was the only reason she’d gone to him last night.

Well, it wasn’t fair. They couldn’t embark on a relationship with one set of rules, then change everything midstream.

She was driving back from Springfield in the middle of the afternoon when traffic was stopped by a police officer and a lineup of flares. A Maple Hill police car, a state police vehicle, and an ambulance pulled up to a collision at a spot where a small country road intersected with the highway. Someone pulling out onto the highway had apparently been struck by the other car heading south.

She recognized Randy immediately. He was on his knees in the road, working over a figure too small to be an adult.

Chilly and another police officer had their hands full trying to keep a woman back while Randy worked. Her head was bleeding, and she was crying hysterically.

Traffic from the other direction stopped, and the policeman directing it waved her on. She proceeded with a sick feeling in the pit of her stomach and said a prayer for the child on the pavement and the bleeding woman.

She took Starla home, delivered Mr. Kubik to a doctor’s appointment, then picked up the mayor to take her to the hospital on the edge of town. She looked grim.

“Everything okay, Your Honor?” Paris asked, wanting to think about something other than the image of the accident.
